Privacy Policy

Synapse is a spaced-repetition study app. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. Synapse is currently in public beta — see the note at the end.

What we store

  • Your study data — the decks, cards, and review history you create or import. By default this lives only in your browser (IndexedDB). If you create an account, it is also synced to our database so you can use Synapse across devices.
  • Account details — your email address, a display name, and a username. Your email is used for sign-in and account-related messages only.
  • Images you upload — optional profile banner and deck icons, stored in our file storage.
  • Friends — if you use the social features, we store the friend connections you make. Friends can see your username, display name, and your daily study activity (a count of reviews per day). They cannot see the contents of your cards or notes.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers.
  • We do not read the contents of your decks or cards, except as needed to store and sync them for you.
  • We do not run third-party advertising trackers.

Service providers

We use Supabase for authentication, database, and file storage, and Vercel for hosting. These providers process data on our behalf to operate the service. We may use privacy-respecting, aggregate analytics to understand overall usage; this does not identify you personally.

Your choices

  • Use it locally. You can use Synapse without an account, in which case your data never leaves your device.
  • Export your data. You can download all of your decks, cards, and review history at any time from the app.
  • Delete your account. Deleting your account permanently removes your synced data, profile, and friend connections from our servers.

Data retention

We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your synced data is removed from our active database. Backups, where they exist, age out over time.

Children

Synapse is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Beta notice

Synapse is in active development. Features and data handling may change, and we will update this policy as they do. Because the service is in beta, we strongly recommend exporting your data periodically as a backup.
