Free spaced repetition flashcard app

Synapse — Free Spaced Repetition Flashcard App

Synapse is a spaced repetition flashcard app that schedules reviews with FSRS-5, so you remember more in less time. A minimalist, local-first alternative to Anki and Quizlet: no ads, no card limits, zero configuration. Import your existing Anki decks in one click, design your own study dashboard, and let the scheduler handle the rest — free during the public beta.

Everything you need to remember

FSRS-5 scheduling, on by default

Every deck is scheduled with FSRS-5 out of the box — no buried settings. A built-in optimizer refits the weights to your own review history for more accurate scheduling.

Bring your Anki decks

Import .apkg files directly in your browser — including modern zstd-compressed exports, cloze deletions, and image-occlusion cards. Switching doesn't mean starting from zero.

Local-first

Your decks and review history live in your browser's local database — fast, private, and always yours. Sign in to sync everything across devices.

A dashboard you design

Drag-and-drop widgets — focus timer, study streak, daily goal ring, leaderboard, notes — arranged however you study best, and synced to your account.

Import from a spreadsheet

Turn a CSV or Excel file into a study deck in minutes. Perfect for vocab lists and question banks you already have.

Stats, streaks & friends

Review heatmaps, per-deck statistics, daily streaks, and friend leaderboards keep the study habit alive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Synapse free?

Yes. Synapse is free during its public beta, with no ads and no card limits. A cosmetic-only Pro tier (extra themes, deck cover art) is planned for later, but it won't gate scheduling or study features.

What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a study technique that schedules each flashcard for review just before you'd forget it, spacing reviews over increasing intervals. Synapse uses FSRS-5, a published spaced-repetition algorithm, to compute those intervals for every card.

Can I import my Anki decks into Synapse?

Yes. Synapse imports .apkg files exported from Anki directly in your browser, including modern zstd-compressed exports, cloze deletions, and image-occlusion cards.

Do I need an account to use Synapse?

Yes — a free account gets you in. Your study data is stored locally in your browser and syncs across your devices whenever you're signed in.

Is there a Synapse mobile app?

Synapse is a responsive web app that works in any mobile browser. There is no dedicated iOS or Android app yet.

How is Synapse different from Anki?

Anki is powerful but dense. Synapse keeps the serious spaced repetition — FSRS-5 on by default instead of opt-in — and wraps it in a minimalist interface with a customizable widget dashboard, one-click .apkg import, and zero configuration required to start.
